Sealing Systems, Inc. (SSI) manufactures custom-fit manhole inserts that drop in beneath the cover to stop rainfall-induced inflow at the lid. Each insert is sized to a specific casting's inside diameter, outside diameter, and cover dimensions, then injection-molded from Marlex HXM 50100 ultra-high-density polyethylene copolymer for impact strength and chemical resistance. SSI inserts carry a 5-year replacement warranty against failure in workmanship.
SSI inserts are the most cost-effective tool in a utility’s I&I (inflow & infiltration) reduction toolkit. A leaking cover typically admits 0.20 to over 5 gallons per minute during rainfall — multiplied across an entire collection system, that’s a meaningful fraction of a treatment plant’s wet-weather load. Inserts are installable by in-house collections-maintenance personnel with no specialized equipment, which keeps the deployment cost low enough to attempt system-wide rollouts.
